I spotted this advertisement for a brewery on the side of a now residential building, a minute’s walk away from the Bromley by Bow tube station.
A little bit of internet research has confirmed that this wasn’t just an advert for Taylor Walker products, in a similar vein to Ghost signs (see earlier post Ghost Train (sign)) as I first thought, but the only remaining outward sign of a building’s history.
Formerly the Imperial Crown pub, according to the Lost Pub project, it was Taylor Walker Brewery which closed in 2003 and has since been converted into flats. According to information from Pubs History, the Imperial Crown had appeared in official records since at least 1835. Without the sign, there was no obvious way to see the building’s former use, so it’s nice to see this little bit of history was preserved and has survived for the curious to discover more.
